As the breeding
season was under way and we had chicks about to hatch the Hand Feed
was the first item we used. For many years we had, like most bird breeders,
prepared our own mixture. We changed the formula occasionally but
laboriously liquidised a mixture of sunflower kernels, baby food etc.
Previously we also added probiotic and vitamins as required, however
this was no longer necessary as both are included in Kaytee Hand Feed
and the Macaw Feed. Mixing could not be simpler, just add hot water
and stir thoroughly.
The
babies growth improved noticeably, with eyes opening sooner and
feathers showing through several days earlier than before. The colours
of the feathers in the young birds were noticeably brighter and
resembled adult plumage in intensity. Weaning was earlier than before
and they were then introduced to Adolescent formula. This makes the
transition from handfeeding to independence easier than before. The
higher nutrient content in Adolescent means the youngsters are sure to
be getting a clean well balanced diet with no worries about getting
fat from eating too much sunflower.
